Is It an Insect? Emergent Reader freebie

Hey friends!  Where on earth does the weekend go?  It just flies by!  I always have this list of things that I'm positive I will be able to finish and then WHAM!  It's Sunday evening and I'm only halfway through the list.  Goodness gracious!!!  This is a sad week for many of us.  STATE TESTING!!!
That should be a four letter word y'all!  Thank the Lord my sweet Kindergarten kids don't have to take any test but our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders do.  ALL week!  Which means we have to use our teeny tiny voices all week and we are practically trapped in our classrooms until testing is done for the day.  {sigh}  It is going to be a LOOOOOONG week!  Prayers for the teachers and students who have to take the tests and prayers for those of us who have to try our very best to keep little ones quiet!  I hope that one day we will have some folks making decisions who actually KNOW what is BEST for kids!  Can I get an AMEN?  and maybe a little prayer that getting on my soapbox doesn't get me fired?  ;)

I made a little emergent reader for this week.  You can click on the image above to go to TPT and get it for FREE!  Working on another freebie for tomorrow.

  1. I am doing bugs right now, this is perfect! Thank you!

    Apples and ABC's

  2. AMEN sister! My aunt, Judy Solano is a Colorado State Representative. After 32 years in the classroom she retired when her principal told her she needed to stop teaching so much science and social studies and focus on literacy....because of the nasty test. Teaching is her passion and she is out there fighting for all of us teachers.
Anyway, good luck to all of you this week!
....and as always thanks for the're the best!

  3. Ahhh! I hope you have a good week! AND, just think of me while you are up at the crack of dawn and I'm home snuggled in my bed! I love being off track! :)

Your emergent reader is SO cute!

  4. Amen, sister! Our school just finished up a couple of weeks ago. I teach first grade, so it didn't affect me, BUT my schedule was changed and the extra staff coming into my room for guided reading was halted for a week. I was so glad to get back to my regular routine!

  5. Bugs will be in a couple of weeks, so thanks for this cute emergent reader! Our testing is in a couple of weeks and AMEN that we don't have to do it in kindergarten yet in OHIO, either!!

  6. We have state testing for the ENTIRE month of May! No reading help or learning support for my first graders. It's crazy!!

  7. Thank you! I just posted pics from our field trip to the Butterfly House.

I teach at a private school and we do test the kindergartners. I wrote about that last week....thank God for the moments of laughter!

  8. AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And thanks for the are SO awesome:)

  9. This is great...thank you! We will be starting our Insect Unit shortly. Perfect timing.

  14. I feel ya! Not sure if your in FL but our testing just started here. I'll be eating lunch with my class and our specials time is cut in half. We really are cooped up in our room all week! Yikes!

    Sharing Kindergarten

  16. AMEN! Teachers in British Columbia, Canada are currently embroiled in a dispute with our government. We are fighting to keep class size limits and appropriate staffing ratios for students with special needs. I fear we will go the way of the almighty test if we don't stand up for our children now! I, too, 'hope that one day we will have some folks making decisions who actually KNOW what is BEST for kids!'
Thanks so much for all of the wonderful ideas you share, Deanna! My kids and I are loving them!

  17. AMEN~ I teach 2nd grade and my students have to take the Stanford 10 test next week. Nothing like asking 2nd graders to sit and test for 2 hours each day of testing and testing is 4 days. I love all you do! I am passing this blog onto the kindergarten teachers at my school.
