Teachers are continuously developing fun ways for skill review. For instance, playing various games is an exciting way to review content. Additionally, allowing students to create projects is a creative way to show all they’ve learned. However, both of these strategies may have been used throughout the year. Now, there is nothing wrong with repeating these activities! However, using something new is the perfect way to help students focus as the year winds down! Thus, turning students into doctors is ideal for reviewing math and literary content through Skill Surgery! Honestly, students will have so much fun during this engaging skill review.
Skill Surgery
This is no ordinary skill review! It is a creative, exciting way that ensures students remain focused for every minute of the class. To get started, I love to add in a convincing dialogue to show students there is a problem. Thus, I tell them they need to put on their doctor coats because they are going into surgery! Therefore, we get dressed in paper gowns and headgear to hold a pretend spotlight. Students are eager to get right into the lesson with this exciting introduction!
Math Surgery for Skill Review
Once students are ready for the operating room, they will begin helping with various math problems. Specifically, Silly Sums provides surgeons with equations containing problems. The doctors will examine different problems to find an addend that does not belong. After the diagnosis, they will extract the extra addend and stitch the equation back together. The math problems will all be so thankful for the dedicated help from the doctors.
Literacy Surgery for Skill Review
Since students learn so much in reading and writing throughout the year, they have more surgery to perform! In Punctuation Problem, surgeons will examine sentences with all three types of punctuation. After reading the sentences, they will extract the extra punctuation. Then, they will stitch the sentence back together. Students will love showing they know how to use punctuation correctly with this activity.
As students spend more time in the operating room, they will work with Tangle Sentences. They will have to apply everything they’ve learned to help their patients because they will receive sentences with extra words out of order! The surgeons have to work hard to figure out the sentence, extract the extra word, and stitch the sentence back together.
Since the doctors will do such a great job, Contraction Action will also need help. Therefore, the doctors will have to decide on the treatment for two words by extracting extra letters. While this is a challenging skill, the doctors have the skills needed to succeed in the operation room.
Doctor Bag Take Home Games
Every doctor needs a medical bag! Hence, the unit also includes patterns and directions to make a doctor bag. There is even a special pocket game for each skill.
- For Contraction Action, students have a game similar to Concentration.
- Sum Problems allow students to work on fact fluency.
- Punctuation Problem allows students to read sentences and decide which punctuation mark is missing.
- Tangled Sentences have students answer skills-based questions. If correct, they get to extract a bone from the patient. Thus, this is just like Operation.
Students will love taking their bags home to show their family members the skills reviewed.
Honestly, students will have so much fun in Skill Surgery. They will love the teacher’s trust in them to perform needed operations! Therefore, they will be eager and excited to do their very best on each surgical procedure.
