Hey y’all! I love books! I hope you’ll join me every Tuesday as I share a new book with you.
Hopefully I will pick some that you’ve never heard of before. 🙂
I recently purchased this book and read it to my grandbabies who are 5 and 7 and they both LOVED it. You know a book is a hit when they ask you to read it again and again!
Give Up, Gecko! is a Folktale from Uganda that is retold by Margaret Read MacDonald
Y’all this is the PERFECT book to add to your back to school collection because it has so many great character lessons embedded in the story. Teamwork and Perseverance!
Sorry, I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me tell you about the story.
The animals spent days and days waiting for rain and they are so thirsty!
They decided that they would have to take matters into their own hands and dig for water.
So the largest animals took turns digging.
(this is also a great book to get them moving a little because the refrain is repetitive and fun)
“Elephant! Elephant!
Heavy! Heavy! Heavy!
Elephant! Elephant!
STOMP! STOMP! STOMP!
No water here. I give up.”
One by one the big animals try and one by one they all give up.
So the middle sized animals try and one by one they all give up.
When gecko decides to give it a try the other animals laugh at him and ell him he should give up.
But gecko refuses to give up and he keeps on trying.
He stomps for an hour, two hours, three hours,
Then, suddenly….
I just love the illustrations in this book.
After reading. it came up to his little neck it would be a great time to talk about how the illustrations play an important role in the story. “Look at the expressions on gecko’s face. What do you think gecko is thinking? What do you think he will do next?”
at the end gecko is a hero because he persevered and didn’t give up!
I wrote a little poem (and by little I mean Short!)
to go along with the story and a writing activity.
This would make a great class book or bulletin board at the
beginning of the year. You can click on the image below to download it.
