Fall is one of my favorite times of year to teach! I love all things Fall: pumpkins, apples, scarecrows, bats, spiders, owls.... Did I mention it is my favorite time of the year to teach? The littles get so excited about learning and isn't that what it's all about? Sometimes teachers get so bogged down with teaching what's in the basal (no basal for me, thank you very much!) that we forget that true learning takes place when the teacher and students are EXCITED about what they are ... continue reading...

Butterflies and vocabulary
I received a few comments on TPT this week about my units {the buyer stated that the Vocabulary was inappropriate for Kindergarten kids} and it made me start thinking about how different we all are as teachers. We have different philosophies about HOW and WHAT children should learn. Some of us are given teacher manuals and basal programs to teach from {my district doesn't use a reading program} and many of us are given a framework to use to guide us in our instruction. I believe that ... continue reading...
Making Read Alouds Come to Life: Creepy Carrots

Read alouds take the student's focus away from having to decode the words and gives students a chance to really hone in and focus on the meaning of the story. I love it when I read a story to children, and they love it so much that they beg me to READ IT AGAIN! It's so important to reread books to children and give them time to: Hear you thinking ... continue reading...

Halloween and Pumpkin Fun!
Build a Pumpkin! Last year at Wal-Mart I found these plastic pumpkin pieces and I created a spinner and recording sheet to go along with them. The parts remind me of Mr. Potato Head parts and come with several different noses, mouths, eyes, ears, etc: The game is a two player game. Player 1 spins the spinner and if the spinner lands on nose the player chooses the nose for the pumpkin. Then it's the next players turn. Play continues until the pumpkin is completed. The kids love this game ... continue reading...
